Illinois Residents: Take Action to Defeat Dangerous Bill

UPDATE: Thanks to your efforts, the House Sponsor of SB 648 has decided to stop the bill and rework it over the summer.

Alley Cat Allies was very concerned about SB 648 because it would have required that nonprofit shelters transfer stray animals to pounds, even if the shelter would be able to achieve positive outcomes for them. The bill would have put more strain on county facilities, likely increasing the number of animals killed. We were also concerned about the bill interfering with Trap-Neuter-Return programs.

Alley Cat Allies will stay engaged on this issue and keep you informed of any developments.

ORIGINAL ISSUE:

This action is ONLY for residents of Illinois

Save Illinois CatsA destructive bill has passed the Illinois Senate, and we need your help to stop it in the Illinois House of Representatives. SB 648 would endanger cats’ lives by requiring nonprofit shelters to transfer stray cats to pounds.

Requiring private animal shelters and rescue groups to turn animals over to county pounds would dramatically increase the numbers of cats entering county facilities, putting more strain on existing resources, and likely increasing the number of animals killed. Pounds would not even have to attempt to save the cats’ lives.

We are also concerned about what effect SB 648 would have on shelters engaging in Trap-Neuter-Return programs. We are certain this bill is inhumane and wasteful, spending taxpayer dollars to kill more animals in county facilities.

Please contact your State Representative and respectfully ask him or her to oppose this dangerous bill.
