Indiana Residents: Tell Spencer County to Make Immediate Improvements to its Animal Shelter

2018_ADV_FY19_IN_SpencerCounty_Shelters_344.pngThis action alert is for Indiana residents only.

UPDATE—October 8, 2018:

The Spencer County Animal Shelter has closed following a decision on October 4 by the county Animal Control Board. Shelter director Christina Payne has been terminated. The animals currently in the shelter's care will be transferred to rescue groups within the next week. Alley Cat Allies thanks you for raising your voice to help make this necessary change happen. But there is still more work to do. We must make sure that there are policies and best practices in place that protect the shelter animals so this kind of abuse never happens again.

Read our news post to learn more about the closure and next steps.

Original Message

An employee and volunteers at the Spencer County, Indiana, animal shelter went public recently with their stories of shocking animal abuse. The animal control officer in charge of the shelter had instructed them to kill live cats and kittens by putting the animals in a freezer. Disturbingly, the county prosecutor has declined to press charges. There must be accountability for these heinous acts.

Let the elected officials in Spencer County know you want to see immediate and meaningful improvements at the animal shelter.
