Make Your Mew Year’s Resolution to Help Cats!

Happy Mew Year It’s a new year, and it’s time to refresh our commitment to making a difference for the cats in our communities. In 2015, Alley Cat Allies and advocates all over the country and the world worked harder than ever to save cats. Now in 2016, we hope everyone who cares about cats will resolve to continue fighting for them by supporting humane shelter reform, practicing Trap-Neuter-Return, caring for colonies and more. Alley Cat Allies’ president Becky Robinson, along with the whole Alley Cat Allies team, is making a resolution to protect and improve the lives of more cats in 2016. We hope you will join us. Make your New Year’s resolution to help cats.

Becky Robinson is Going Down Under

Leaping Kitten Alley Cat Allies Founder and President Becky Robinson will be traveling to Sydney, Australia to speak at the Business of Saving Lives Conference on February 17. The three-day conference, starting February 15 and presented by Helen Woodward Animal Center, Alley Cat Allies and Maggie’s Rescue, will focus on animal rescue, shelter management, advocacy, fundraising, and more. Learn more about the conference and Becky’s plans in Australia. Bringing animal advocates together and mobilizing people to protect cats is more important than ever as Australia is in the midst of a government-sanctioned plan to kill two million cats in five years.

Shelter Medicine Program Saves Lives and Sets a Precedent

Leaping Kitten In December, Becky Robinson traveled to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to present to shelter medicine students in the College of Veterinary Medicine. While there, Becky learned more about the shelter medicine program launched in 2013 by Bob Weedon, DVM, MPH, a clinical assistant professor at the College of Veterinary Medicine and head of the program. Shelter medicine is targeted healthcare for animals in shelters, and the program is teaching veterinary students to save shelter animals and community cats. Dr. Weedon will also be presenting with Alley Cat Allies’ Brianna Lovell at the NAVC Conference in Orlando! Read more about Dr. Weedon’s shelter medicine program and the great work he and his students are doing.

Protecting Cats from Cruel Steel-Jaw Leghold Traps

eNews_AnitCruelty.jpg In December 2015 in Omaha, Nebraska, a cat named Ivy was rescued from an illegal and archaic steel-jaw leghold trap. The crushing trap slammed down on her leg and held her with a vice-like grip, causing her serious pain and damaging her leg (she's since recovered). This was the third illegal trap-related incident within 30 days for the Nebraska Humane Society. Though leghold traps are illegal in Omaha and many other states and cities, the laws are not always properly enforced. And despite the cruelty and dangers of such traps, there are still many places in the United States where they are legal. To protect cats and other animals outdoors, it’s important to educate ourselves on our communities’ inhumane trapping laws, and fight for humane policies like Trap-Neuter-Return. Learn more about the Omaha incident, and what you can do to protect outdoor cats in your community.

Adoptable Cat: Dunesberry

AdoptMe_Dunesberry.jpg Dunesberry was found outside as a very small kitten in Atlantic City, New Jersey, but now she is growing up and is ready to give you all her energy and love. She’s peppy and curious, loves to eat, and enjoys a good game of fetch as much as she likes snuggling. She’s very playful, so she would do great with other young cats who can keep up with her. Dunesberry is FIV positive, but she’s not worried about it! She can live just as long, happy, and healthy a life as any other cat. If you are in the Atlantic City area, Dunesberry would love to join your family and liven up your home! Find out how you can adopt Dunesberry today.
