Johnson County Animal Shelter Reaches Lifesaving Milestone

Alley Cat Allies Future Five

Our Future Five Shelter Partners in Franklin, Indiana, have hit a huge milestone: 100 percent saved in the months of May and June! Thanks to guidance from our Future Five: Shelter Partners to Save Cats’ Lives program, new lifesaving initiatives, and the tremendous collaborative effort between Johnson County Animal Control and the Humane Society of Johnson County, all cats entering the shelter were saved. Thanks to humane policies, hundreds of cats will be saved each year.

Find out how Johnson County Animal Shelter and the Future Five are creating model programs to save cats.

North Ridgeville “Humane” Officer Kills Again: Sign the Petition

21480_KittensByWoodPile.jpg

This is a devastating case of déjà vu—last year, North Ridgeville, Ohio, “Humane” Officer Barry Accorti shot and killed five kittens, with children watching.  With your help, we brought national attention to this horrific act of cruelty and gave a voice to “the woodpile five,” as the kittens came to be known. We thought we had reached a resolution, but last month the same officer trapped a defenseless baby raccoon and shot and killed her in the cage while children looked on. Join us in combating the continued culture of cruelty in North Ridgeville, Ohio.

Sign the petition today calling for the dismissal of Humane Officer Barry Accorti and his supervisor Police Chief Michael Freeman.

Adoptable Cats: Meet Twitter

AdoptMe_Twitter.jpg

Twitter is an affectionate 1-year-old torbie (tortoiseshell-tabby) female with a lot to say. It’s fitting that such a social cat came to us through Twitter, the social networking site. When writer and former child actress Mara Wilson met Twitter at the Atlantic City Boardwalk, she noticed the kitty was very friendly and not eartipped, so she shared a picture on Twitter (@MaraWritesStuff) and asked Alley Cat Allies to keep an eye out for this cutie. We scooped up Twitter, and got her spayed and ready to find a home. Twitter loves to cuddle and nap with people, and true to her name, she’s very chatty and wants to have the last meow.

Find out how you can make Twitter a part of your family, and see other adoptable cats.

Animal Rights National Conference

ACA at Conference

Alley Cat Allies will be exhibiting at the Animal Rights National Conference in Los Angeles, July 10-13. We’ll teach attendees about our mission to save cats’ lives, including our work with shelters to start proactive programs like TNR and neonatal kitten nurseries. As the world’s longest-running and largest conference dedicated to animal rights, this event will help us reach hundreds of animal lovers eager to learn how to save more animals in their communities.

Admittance to the exhibit hall is free, so if you’re near Los Angeles, stop by the Alley Cat Allies booth to say “hi” and pick up some of our materials on saving cats!

Arlington, Texas TNR Program Nationally Recognized

Two Cats on Grass by Fence

The Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program in Arlington, Texas, is getting national recognition. Mayor Robert Cluck received an Outstanding Achievement Award from the U.S. Conference of  Mayors, which specifically noted the effectiveness of Arlington’s TNR program. This is one more ringing endorsement for humane programs for cats! The award allows Mayor Cluck to share his experiences with other community leaders throughout the country as they look for effective approaches to community cat populations. Alley Cat Allies is excited for the opportunities granted by the recognition, and for the lifesaving progress that earned this fantastic honor for Arlington!
