Celebrating 25 Years of Cat Advocacy

This year is special for Alley Cat Allies: it’s our 25th anniversary! For a quarter century we have supported caregivers, changed laws, improved shelters, and most importantly, saved cats. But not every community has embraced TNR and other lifesaving programs yet. So as we celebrate 25 years of Alley Cat Allies, we also look to the future of advocacy, and we need your support as we move into the next generation of cat protection. Learn how we went from one cat colony in an alley in Adams Morgan to a national advocacy organization for all cats.

Keep Cats Safe and Warm with Our Winter Safety Tips

It’s a winter wonderland outside, and we have some winter safety tips that will keep cats safe and warm this season. Although community cats are well-adjusted to living outdoors, when the temperatures plummet, you can take a few extra steps to make the cats more comfortable. We have info on providing an outdoor shelter that will protect cats from the cold and wind. We’ve also got tips on keeping water drinkable (hint: hot water actually freezes faster!), and why you should avoid melting products like salt and antifreeze. Give the cats a helping hand with our winter weather safety tips!

Reinvigorated TNR Program at Bayside State Prison

When we last updated you, we had reached an agreement with prison officials that would ensure the cats would receive the care and food they need. Now we are delighted to tell you that last week we went trapping on prison grounds for the first time since the agreement, and it was a huge success! This is not the first time we have conducted TNR at Bayside, and we will ensure the program continues to meet the cats’ needs. The reinvigorated TNR program will provide the cats at Bayside State Prison with all the support and care they need.

Veterinarians Support TNR in Letter to JAVMA

In a letter to the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (JAVMA), a group of thirteen veterinarians from around the country called on the AVMA to update their outdated 2004 policy on community cats and issue a new science-based policy centered on Trap-Neuter-Return. In the letter, they highlighted the extensive research supporting TNR and its benefits to cats and the community. Veterinarians play such an important role in improving the lives of cats, whether the patient lives inside or outside. We applaud all veterinarians who speak up on behalf of good policies for all cats! See what the veterinarians had to say about the sound science behind TNR.
