Protecting TNR in Our Nation’s Capital

eNews_DC-WildlifePlan.jpg This summer, the Washington D.C. Department of Energy and the Environment released their 2015 Wildlife Action Plan draft. The draft plan advises to “revisit” D.C.’s longstanding and effective Trap-Neuter-Return policy in a misguided attempt to save wildlife. With the help of citizens all over the country, we sent a message to D.C. to protect TNR and community cats. On September 18, Alley Cat Allies testified in support of TNR at the Committee on Transportation and the Environment’s public roundtable about the Plan. Nearly 40 people gave testimony, and of them, around 35 spoke about cat issues. Most of them supported TNR. Committee chairperson and roundtable conductor Mary Cheh was an enthusiastic and fair host, and the meeting had an overall positive tone for cats. We will stay involved with the Plan and keep you informed of all developments. Learn more and sign the petition to defend TNR in the nation’s capital. If you are a D.C. resident, you can submit testimony in support of TNR until the end of TODAY, September 21.

Kristen Lindsey Found in Violation

eNews_Vet-Texas-Cruelty.jpg On August 28, Alley Cat Allies attended the Texas State Board of Veterinary Examiners meeting to address the conduct of Kristen Erin Lindsey. Kristen Lindsey is the veterinarian who raised protests around the country when she posted a picture of herself holding a cat by an arrow through its head, and bragging about her kill, on Facebook. Meeting attendees, including Alley Cat Allies Staff Attorney Rebekah DeHaven, gave statements in front of the Board. After deliberation, the Board announced that they found Lindsey in violation. The details of the violation, and the penalties for Lindsey, are expected in October. Learn about the meeting and stay up to date on the facts.

Alley Cat Allies Condemns Australia’s Cat Killing Plan

eNews_Australia.jpg Australia has declared open season on feral cats, and Alley Cat Allies strongly condemns the decision. In July, Australian Minister for the Environment Greg Hunt announced the “Threatened Species Strategy”; a plan to protect native Australian wildlife by supporting the shooting, poisoning, and lethal trapping of outdoor cats. Australia aims to kill two million cats by 2020 with the help of FeralCatScan, a government-funded smartphone app that allows users to track outdoor cat sightings so cats can be killed. This policy of killing cats is cruel, senseless, and ineffective. Trap-Neuter-Return is the only humane and effective approach, and Alley Cat Allies stands with the Australian groups fighting to protect Australia’s embattled cats. Learn more about Australia’s policy and Alley Cat Allies’ stance.

Adoptable Cat: Sam

AdoptMe_Sam.jpg Sam is a handsome and super friendly 3 year old tuxedo cat who was once part of a community cat colony.  Since he was very much not feral, Alley Cat Allies Staff Attorney Rebekah DeHaven took him in. Now Sam is doing great and is ready to find a new family to love, and a relaxing place to call home. He is incredibly sweet and affectionate—get ready to have a cat that sleeps right next to or on you! Find out how you can adopt Sam today.
