Celebrating Animal Control Agencies That Save Cats

Last week was “National Animal Care and Control Appreciation Week,” and we want to celebrate by sharing the stories of some of the progressive animal control agencies that are embracing policies that save more cats’ lives! We also want to introduce you to our new staff member, Alice Burton. Alice was an animal control officer at the Animal Welfare League of Arlington for 14 years, and she went from a TNR skeptic to a true believer. Now she’s our animal control and shelter liaison, helping other animal control officers implement lifesaving policies and transform their communities with TNR. Read about three of the animal control agencies that are saving cats’ lives every day.

Alley Cat Allies Teams Up to Help Cats in Virginia

We’re taking protecting and improving the lives of cats to the next level in Virginia! Alley Cat Allies is teaming up with Humane Network and the Virginia Federation of Humane Societies for our new project—Every Kitty, Every City: Virginia. We’re working even harder to raise awareness, advocate for humane policies for all cats, and educate the community about outdoor cats, colony care, and Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR). If you live in Virginia, please fill out our quick and easy survey and help us learn more about the cats in your community! Read more about our new initiative to protect cats in Virginia.

Going International! Reaching Out in Portugal

Our advocacy for cats continues even further: this time in Portugal! We connected with local government officials and activists about community cats at the Portugal Carers Meeting, hosted by Gatos Urbanos. The theme of this year’s meeting was “the right of the animal to live in its habitat”, and we spoke with officials about community cats and their right to remain in their outdoor homes. We also encouraged them to adopt humane policies like Trap-Neuter-Return so cats can continue living happy, healthy lives outdoors. Learn more about our presence at the Portugal Carers Meeting.

Kristen Lindsey Sues the Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners

eNews_Vet-Texas-Cruelty.jpg April 15 marked one year since Texas veterinarian Kristen Lindsey killed a cat with a bow and arrow and bragged about it on Facebook. Today, the fight for justice continues, and may hit another roadblock. A new date for the hearing on the Lindsey case is set for April 25-27, but Lindsey’s attorney has filed motions that could dismiss or postpone the hearing if approved. The motions were filed because Lindsey is suing the Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners, claiming it has no authority to punish her and take her veterinary license. Learn more about the latest development in the Kristen Lindsey case.

Alley Cat Allies Joins Montgomery County Cat Coalition

eNews_MontCo.jpg We joined a Montgomery County coalition that aims to save the lives of community cats and initiate a county-wide Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program. The Montgomery County Community Cat Coalition was organized by the Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center to help spay/neuter, vaccinate, and microchip as many cats as possible. Alley Cat Allies is lending our expertise to help the Coalition, and we look forward to saving more cats in Montgomery County. Read more about the Montgomery County Cat Coalition.
