June Edition
Thanks to your support, we’ve been busy this month protecting cats around the country. Here are just a few of our current projects and topics of interest:
From the Field: A Model Shelter in Lynchburg
|
Alley Cat Allies’ shelter liaison Alice Burton connected with the Lynchburg Humane Society in Virginia this month to get inspired by the shelter’s success. The Humane Society looks more like a beautiful country house than a shelter on the outside. But it’s far more than just a pretty face—the staff are saving cats’ lives every day with their Trap-Neuter-Return program. Since it started TNR in 2011, the shelter’s live release rate has risen to an amazing 92 percent, with nearly 1000 cats spayed and neutered every year. Alice looks forward to using the Lynchburg Humane Society as a model to help other shelters change for the better. Read more about Alice’s experience at the Lynchburg Humane Society. |
Alley Cat Allies Presents an Encore Internet Cat Video Festival
|
It’s back by popular demand! Alley Cat Allies is presenting an encore screening of the wildly popular Internet Cat Video Festival on June 25 and 26 at the AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring, Maryland. The Festival is a 75-minute reel of the internet’s best cat videos, selected from public nominations in categories like comedy, drama, action, and more. Screenings begin both days at 5:45 p.m., and we’ll have a table with information to help attendees learn about protecting cats. Get your Internet Cat Video Festival tickets today. |
New York Asks Court to Dismiss Anti-Cat Lawsuit
|
We applaud the State of New York’s motion to dismiss a complaint filed by the American Bird Conservancy (ABC). The complaint alleged that the New York Department of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation is violating the Endangered Species Act and endangering piping plover birds by allowing cats to live in Jones Beach State Park. New York's motion questioned whether ABC has standing to make a complaint, and argues that there’s no evidence that cats are harming the piping plovers. In fact, thanks to the good work by NYS Parks, the piping plover population has made a huge recovery since the 1980s—and is actually growing. The Jones Beach State Park is an example of successful coexistence, and we hope the Court dismisses the complaint. Learn more about the Jones Beach case. |
New Resource: Spanish Language Webinar
|
Alley Cat Allies' webinars have gone bilingual! We’ve created a brand new webinar for Spanish speaking cat lovers so an even bigger community can join the cat revolution. The webinar is an introduction to cat advocacy, and walks through how to explain Trap-Neuter-Return and community cat care to your neighbors and local government. Cat advocates come from everywhere and speak every language—we’re working hard to reach more of them than ever. Register to attend the webinar. |
