Cat Advocate,

No doubt about it — community cats are resourceful. They can live and thrive in locations from Alaska to Arizona! But when winter rolls around, even these resilient felines can use a helping hand staying comfortable in their outdoor homes.

That’s why we compiled our Winter Weather Tips to educate concerned cat advocates like you on how best to keep community cats warm this winter! When you check out this tip sheet, you’ll learn things like:

  • Cats need extra food during the winter and fresh water twice a day. Wet food freezes, so put out dry food as well (or just feed dry food). Use water bowls that are deep rather than wide and place them in sunny areas to keep water from freezing. Avoid using metal bowls.

  • Cats like to cuddle up together for warmth, so consider making cat shelters that can fit two to three cats at once. Don’t go too big, though—heat disperses quickly if there is too much space.. And be sure to clear snow away from shelter entrances and exits so the cats don’t get snowed in.

  • If cats aren’t using the outdoor shelters you provide, try to find where they are sleeping and then do what you can there to “upgrade” the spot, such as adding straw for insulation. Straw, unlike hay (which should never be used), repels moisture. Also, try providing a shield to protect cats from harsh winds.

Thank you and be sure to read our Winter Weather Tips to learn more about how to help cats this winter.
