Dear Cat Advocate ,

Everywhere I turn, I’m excited to see things opening up again. The long days of summer have people out and about, and it’s been great—and inspiring—to hear from so many of you about your recent efforts to help cats in your communities.

July marks the anniversary of Alley Cat Allies. Thirty-one years ago, on the sort of warm, long summer day that gets people out and moving around, I took a fateful shortcut through an alleyway in Washington, D.C., and it ended up completely changing my life. That evening, I discovered a family of cats living and coexisting with their human neighbors. I committed myself to improving their lives and became their voice—and today, Alley Cat Allies is an international organization that has empowered 650,000 supporters and advocates across the country and around the world.

Across the years, I’ve been amazed and inspired by all the good, kind people who step up and speak out to save cats. As with other caring professions, sometimes those on the front lines of our movement need help. Please seek support if you need it. I encourage everyone to look out for one another.

As a former social worker, mental health is of the utmost importance to me, especially that of the incredible people working to save animals every day. At Alley Cat Allies, we’re drawing attention to the high suicide rates among veterinarians.

To all veterinarians, to veterinary technicians, to caregivers of cats, and to anyone and everyone, my message is:

I care about you, you are important, and you are not alone.

If you are feeling overwhelmed or just need to talk, please call The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline toll-free at 1-800-273-8255. There is no cost and you can call anytime - 24/7. Please share this number with anyone you know who is in distress.

Thank you for being a dedicated cat advocate and for adding your voice to the growing (and unstoppable!) movement to save the lives of cats and those who care for them.

Thank you, always, for standing up...

For the cats,
Becky
