Tell North Ridgeville's Mayor to Halt the Killing of Cats and Meet with Alley Cat Allies

Update

Good News! North Ridgeville Will No Longer Catch and Kill Feral Cats—City Will Direct All Feral Cat Questions to Animal Welfare Groups.

Thank you for urging North Ridgeville Mayor David Gillock to consider more humane approaches for feral cats! After countless people nationwide spoke out against the shooting of five kittens by a North Ridgeville humane officer, the city has decided to stop catching and killing feral cats. Instead, residents who call with questions about feral cats will be directed to local animal welfare organizations that can assist them.

In a letter to Alley Cat Allies, Mayor Gillock wrote that the city is also forming a community civic group that people can turn to with questions about feral cats. “Hopefully, these measures will give our residents the tools necessary to deal with cats, in a manner that all will find acceptable,” Gillock wrote.

Alley Cat Allies was on the ground in North Ridgeville in June supporting local efforts to push for humane measures for cats. We now look forward to working with local organizations to create better awareness about feral cats and about Trap-Neuter-Return, the only humane and effective way approach to the feral cat population.

Original Action

Kittens by a woodpileI'm outraged that a so-called "Humane" Officer in North Ridgeville, Ohio, shot and killed five kittens.

North Ridgeville Mayor David Gillock should issue an immediate order halting the "euthanasia" of cats by Humane Officers—and meet with Alley Cat Allies to discuss more humane measures for feral cats, including community-supported Trap-Neuter-Return.

Humane Officers should be educating residents about how to treat animals humanely and coexist peacefully—not shooting kittens in front of children. It's clear that North Ridgeville Humane Officers need training in how to treat animals humanely and how to humanely handle feral cats.

Please issue an immediate moratorium on "euthanasia" of cats by Humane Officers and meet with Alley Cat Allies to discuss more humane measures for feral cats, including community-supported Trap-Neuter-Return.
