We will present the petition signatures at the upcoming meetings for the National Association of Counties, National League of Cities, and the United States Conference of Mayors to let them know that Americans want humane policies for cats in their communities.

 

Dear Local Elected Officials,

Every year, U.S. cities and communities needlessly round up millions of cats, put them in shelters, and kill them. Catch and kill programs have been in place for decades despite their ineffectiveness, waste, and cruelty. It's an old-school practice that just doesn't work. It's no surprise that communities across the country are adopting a more effective, common sense approach: Trap-Neuter-Return.

Today, I ask you to adopt common sense policies for cats in your community.

Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is an innovative, humane, and effective approach for outdoor cats. By humanely trapping, neutering, vaccinating, and then returning outdoor cats to their natural environment, communities can end the breeding cycle, protect cats, and save taxpayer dollars.

Studies clearly show that TNR policies effectively reduce the size of outdoor cat colonies both immediately (with the removal and adoption of kittens and socialized cats) and over time (as the population stabilizes and the breeding cycle ends).

Supporters of catch and kill programs have spread misinformation in an effort to slow down the adoption of Trap-Neuter-Return policies. They have spread myths about outdoor cats' health and their impact on the environment. Today I add my name to those concerned citizens who say enough is enough. It's time to stop the killing. It's time for some common sense for cats.

Trap-Neuter-Return is safe for our communities. It's humane. And it's effective. The cruel catch and kill approach shouldn't be an option.

Over the past 20 years, thousands of communities around the country have adopted TNR—and they have seen results. The American public overwhelmingly supports the practice. Today, I ask you to adopt common sense cat policies in your community.
