Last year, Governor Ige of Hawai'i was heavily pressured by the state’s Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) to approve rules that would give it the authority to kill cats "by any means deemed necessary” in Hawai'i's small boat harbors. These rules would also prohibit feeding cats in small boat harbors and would significantly interfere with Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR).

In polls we conducted, the people of Hawai'i overwhelmingly stated that they did not support lethal management actions to control cat populations. In one poll, for example, nearly three in four residents said they believe that destroying one animal species to save another is inhumane and should not be allowed. A small but vocal segment of conservationists are becoming more aggressive in their calls for cats to be rounded up and killed by any means necessary, claiming this will help wildlife populations recover, despite a lack of evidence that lethal means would do anything to help protect wildlife.
