Good news! On April 2, the USDA announced that it would end its experiments using kittens for toxoplasmosis research!
A bill has been introduced in Congress that would end the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s(USDA) cruel and unnecessary testing on cats and kittens. Called the Kittens in Traumatic Testing Ends Now (KITTEN) Act, the bill would prevent the USDA from purchasing, breeding, and using cats and kittens in painful and stress-inducing experiments.
An investigation last year revealed that the USDA has been killing hundreds of kittens for years in a taxpayer-funded research effort. In the past five years alone, more than 200 kittens were fed toxoplasma-infected meat to study the parasitic disease toxoplasmosis. The kittens were killed once testing was finished. They were healthy and could have been adopted instead.
Passage of the KITTEN Act would prevent the USDA from using cats in their cruel and unnecessary testing. Speak out and tell your representative in Congress to pass the act immediately.
Please Support The KITTEN Act and End Cruel Testing on Cats
Dear [Decision Maker],
As a U.S. taxpayer and concerned citizen, I ask you to pass the Kittens in Traumatic Testing Ends Now (KITTEN) Act, H1622/S708, which would end the USDA research that is killing hundreds of kittens. I do not support the use of taxpayer dollars on cruel and unnecessary animal testing. An investigation last year revealed that this ongoing USDA research project feeds hundreds of healthy kittens with meat infected with Toxoplasma gondii in order to study the parasitic disease toxoplasmosis. When testing is finished, the kittens are killed even though they are healthy and could be adopted out instead.
Federal legislators introduced the KITTEN Act in response to this investigation. It would prevent the USDA from purchasing, breeding, and using cats and kittens in painful, stress-inducing, and deadly experiments. The American public does not support the unnecessary and inhumane research on cats. The United States must do better. I respectfully ask that our representatives reflect our values and pass the KITTEN Act to end this testing.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
